I am currently doing a degree by distance, it is hard to keep motivated sometimes – especially when I’m using the computer for example (I should be studying now!). The benefits are great though, it’s a real sense of achievement and these days you get so much support from phone & on line. You can study where & when you want and you don’t have to put up with big-headed people in your classes! You have more scope of academic subjects to choose from & I have found you get much more course books etc than you do at college/university. Good Luck
benefits
1. schedule around your needs
2. more diversity in course selection
3. greater focus due to fewer distractions
4. the potential for much greater interaction and higher levels of learning
problems
1. lack of peer to peer interaction during, and after class
2. it often times costs more, when it should cost less due to much lower overhead.
3. student motivation can be problematic
4. a perception of the masses that its not as good
5. equipment and lab space limit some courses
6. too many profs cut and paste their lecture notes, and quizes from their onsite course, without considering the benefits available for improved curricula via distance education
